SPAB — School Pupil Activity Bus — is a California certification category covering buses that carry pupils to school activities: field trips, athletic contests, band and choir travel, academic competitions and overnight programs. Drivers must hold a valid SPAB certificate issued after a California Highway Patrol examination, maintain medical certification and participate in controlled-substance and alcohol testing programs. The vehicles themselves are subject to CHP inspection.
